Having a baby
Newborn paperwork in the UAE
Updated October 2026
The order of birth certificate, passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, and insurance — and why Dubai and Abu Dhabi are not the same counter.

The order is the product
Every panicked thread mixes five different offices. The sequence that survives is: hospital notification, birth certificate, passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, insurance, vaccines, car seat, one album. Doing the visa before the passport wastes a week. Doing the passport before the certificate is impossible.
The counter depends on the emirate
Dubai certificates come through DHA. Abu Dhabi certificates come through the Department of Health. Sharjah and the northern emirates follow the hospital’s health authority, which is not DHA. Vaccine records follow the same split: Nabidh in Dubai, Malaffi in Abu Dhabi. A single “UAE newborn checklist” that names only DHA is a Dubai article wearing a national title.
The dates people forward
Parents usually plan to collect the birth certificate within 30 days, enroll insurance within about 30 days, and file the residence visa inside a commonly cited 120 days from birth. Those are planning numbers. Official schedules move. The sponsoring parent should read ICP, and GDRFA if their visa is Dubai-issued, before paying a typing centre to “just submit it”.
Short questions
- Can a mother sponsor the baby?
- Often yes. Expect the same income and document rules as any dependent visa, and check the current wording on ICP for the sponsor’s emirate.
- What if our marriage certificate is foreign?
- Assume you will need attestation and a legal Arabic translation. Ask the hospital records office which version they will accept before the day you give birth, not after.
A parent guide, not a government notice. Confirm deadlines on the official portal before you book or pay.
